My Left Foot Themes

Parental Love

The theme of parental love is explored through Christy Brown’s parents. The parents, particularly his mother, show him love, despite his condition. When Christy is isolated by people, his parents are there to ensure he lacks nothing. Christy’s mother saw the potential of her son when nobody wanted to associate with him. Parents remain loving to their children no matter the challenges.

The Theme of Artistry

The film is structured around the theme of artistry. Christy is an artist despite his challenging condition. The protagonist develops an interest in artwork at a very young age. For instance, he wants to use his artistic skills to lure a girl who fancies him. During football activity, Christy is kissed by a beautiful girl and believes that the girl loves him. As a result, he draws a picture of that girl and gives it to her. Regrettably, the girl rejects the gift to the chagrin of Christy.

Depression and Anxiety

Generally, people with different kinds of disabilities are vulnerable to depression and anxiety. The situation is not different for Christy. The themes of depression and anxiety are explored when Christy’s advances for love are turned down. When his love is turned down by a girl he dreams of getting intimate with, Christy becomes depressed and anxious. As a result, he indulges himself in alcoholism to reduce stress. As well, when Dr. Cole announces her engagement to another many, Christy starts contemplating suicide due to depression and anxiety.

Isolation and Alienation

The theme of isolation permeates throughout the whole poem because people avoid Christy due to his condition. Most people do not want to be associated with a disabled person. As a result, Christy finds himself spending time alone. Even when he attends football activities people isolate themselves from him. Such challenges make him go on a drinking spree.

Courage and Determination

Christy is a courageous and determined man despite his condition. He develops an interest in writing and painting when nobody is hopeful of him. The courage and determination enable him to endure the challenges that come with cerebral palsy. Ultimately, he comes to the rescue of his family when his father is dismissed from the job.
