Students will be able to attempt to imitate Whitman's signature poetic style

Students should look at Whitman's poems about America and democracy ("America," certainly, but also "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry," "For You, O Democracy," and a number of others), and discuss Whitman's assessment of the country. What does Whitman love about America? How does he explain and express this love?
Students should then make their own lists of positive attributes about America. Encourage them to be honest...
