Knives Out Summary

Knives Out Summary

Rian Johnson's Knives Out is a murder mystery released in 2019. It begins as a wealthy family holds a birthday party for their dad, uncle and grandfather, Harlan Thrombey, a famous author who's amassed a publishing fortune. The next day, the maid Fran finds him dead of an apparent suicide. When the cops arrive so does a private investigator, Benoit Blanc, who was anonymously paid by someone who assumes Harlan had died of homicide, not suicide.

Blanc discovers that the whole family had a strained relationship with the father. One week before his death, Harlan signed all his will to his nurse, Marta Cabrera. After finding out that Marta was close to Harlan, and whenever she lies she will throw up, Blanc creates an unlikely alliance with her.

Still unknown who hired him, Detective Blanc is getting closer to the murderer. When the funeral for Harlan is happening Ransom (Harlan's grandson) does not show up he says he was busy that day, which makes Blanc suspicious of him.

The next day, the crime lab gets burned to ashes along with the toxicology report and any other evidence for who killed Harlan. Ultimately, Marta thought she killed Harlan but didn’t. Fran the maid saw Ransom switch the drugs and to try to commit murder. Marta gets a call from the hospital and lies that Fran is still alive; Marta and the detective will confirm that Ransom indeed is the suspect. Ransom confesses his murder of Fran to Marta and she throws up in his face; Fran's dead. She lied and the other polieceman just recorded Ransom's confession. In a last ditch effort, Ransom tries to kill Marta but unknowingly grabbed a toy knife. Detective Blanc discovers the toxicology report (hidden in a clock where Fran would keep her other "secret" things), and the detective ruled Harlan's death a suicide, and that Fran didn't overdose Harlan; Ransom was the true criminal.
