In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

Consider the 2015 film "In the Heart of the Sea," which is based on this book.

Philbrick recommends in his notes that readers turn to Stove by a Whale: Owen Chase and the Essex, by Thomas Farel Heffernan, for further information about the Essex. The Jonah Man, a novel by Henry Carlisle, portrays a fictional version of the Essex disaster. You may also wish to consider the most famous work inspired by the Essex disaster: Moby-Dick, by Herman Melville. Consider also Philbrick’s other works about Nantucket, Away Off Shore and Abram's Eyes.
