    Why was there a time jump?

    The earlier parts of the book are simply snapshots of Isobel's childhood. They provide background to parts 4 and 5, the bulk of the book. That background is necessary, but the time jump allows the author to skip parts of Isobel's childhood that may have been more monotonous or at least less important to who she becomes as she grows up. Would the book have benefited from being longer and telling more of Isobel's story without the time jump? Is there anything important that students think was left out about Isobel's childhood?
