Abstention

Refusing to do something (in context, voting).

Allied powers

The group of countries (Canada, Britain, the U.S., and France, primarily) which fought against Germany and its allies.

Blitzkrieg

German for "lightning war," Blitzkrieg is used to refer to the strategy the German military used to conduct themselves: they moved quickly and precisely to overwhelm and destroy its enemy.

Blitz buggy

A jeep or similar vehicle.

Contrivance

Something that was made up to serve a purpose.

Damask

A fabric with woven patterns.

Daft

British slang for something that is absurd and foolish.

Redcurrant

A very small red berry.

Parish

A small administrative district in the Catholic church.

Fascism

A far-right governmental system run by a dictator.

Luftwaffe

The Nazi German air-force.

Führer

A ruthless, dictatorial, and tyrannical leader.

Obviate

To eliminate.

Cat's beer

Slang for milk.

Cockney

An East Londoner with a distinctive accent.

Gunge

Slang for dirt, filth, and grime.

Kriegsmarine

The navy of Nazi Germany.
