House of Hearts Background

Francesca Lia Block's novel House of Hearts was initially published in June 2022 by publisher Rare Bird. It tells the story of Izzy Ames and her high school sweetheart, Cyrus Rivera. With their friends, Izzy and Cyrus create an unbreakable bond together as they work together to move forward despite their traumas and their past. However, Cyrus disappears one day without a trace. Initially, Izzy tries to enlist the help of the authorities, but eventually discovers that no one will help her. She takes matters into her own hands and goes through a strange, intense, and scary journey to find the man that she loves more than anything else in the world.

When it was published, House of Hearts received incredibly positive reviews from audiences and critics alike. Though few major outlets reviewed the novel, many acclaimed authors loved Block's novel. Stephen Graham Jones loved the novel, writing in his review that "House of Hearts is as hot, strange, and heartbreaking as the Mojave at high noon. Compulsively readable, with a heroine whose voice we need now, this is a novel that will teach you how to survive.”
