Hop on Pop Irony

Hop on Pop Irony

Bigger words

When speaking about her father, the young narrator tells us that he says some big words, like "Constantinople" and "Timbuktu." Ironically, an older reader might have trouble reading these words.

Mouse and House

On one page, Seuss talks about a mouse that is on a house, which makes some sense. However, he then speaks about a house on top of a house, which doesn't make as much sense.

Irony of simplicity

Although this story comes across as being quite simple, Seuss's situations and characters in Hop on Pop are actually quite complex. Seuss takes rhyming words and makes an engaging story out of them, which is harder than it might seem!

The Thing

The thing like to sing, but ends up singing a long song. The song is so long that the narrator grows tired and no longer wants to hang out with the Thing.
