Hondo Characters

Hondo Character List

Hondo Lane

A rough character depicted by the John Wayne in the movie, Hondo Lane is a hired gun for the US Army in their fight against the Apaches in Arizona, but Hondo himself is part Apache, and his dual loyalties allow him to handle each situation with respect to the individuals, not just as a group. A merciful man, Hondo's humility allows him to deal well with most people.

Angie and Johnny Lowe

Angie's ranch is where Hondo recovered for a season after being attacked in the desert by Apaches. Her love for Hondo grows as he appreciates her and works hard on her ranch, eventually to the point that she'd rather be his wife, despite the fact that Hondo killed Ed Lowe, her real husband.

Ed Lowe

A crook at heart, Ed Lowe's selfishness and willingness to cut corners make him a dangerous enemy to Hondo, and even when Hondo saves Ed's life in an Apache attack, Ed still makes an attempt on his life.

Vittoro

The Apache chief whose adoption of Angie's son Johnny makes them safe while Hondo is away. Vittoro insists that the boy be raised as an Apache, and Hondo fills the role in their family. Vittoro is a brutal warrior, but a fair man, and his camp is nearly utopian.

Silva

A counterpart to Vittoro's character, Silva's wrathful anger is his motivating drive, and his volatile personality and willingness to kill make him another natural enemy of Hondo.

Lieutenant McKay

Lieutenant McKay is a young Army officer who is tasked with overseeing the outpost near Angie Lowe's ranch. He is depicted as being relatively inexperienced, having only recently graduated from West Point, but he is eager to prove himself and make a positive impact in his new role. McKay is portrayed as a well-meaning and kind-hearted individual, who genuinely cares about the well-being of the settlers and scouts under his command.
