Why wouldn’t Brian like the change that the rifle brought in him?
Brian has become a part of nature. He has had to in order to survive; he had to learn to notice things like bears and wolves, to be quiet and slow and approach foolbirds only at an angle. The rifle separates him from the natural world. He would not have learned so much if he had a rifle from the beginning. And that would have been a problem because the rifle is a finite resource. At some point, he would run out of bullets and where would he be then? Still trapped in the wilderness with less knowledge.
