Hard Candy

Hard Candy Analysis

Hailey a 14-year old teenager has plans of exposing Jeff a 32-year photographer under suspicions of being a pedophile, a rapist and a murderer. He persuades Jeff to meet through online chat groups. Jeff initially has reservations about the whole idea due to her age and when she appears more than willing, he gives in. Hailey invites herself into his house the first time they meet with a scheme of exposing him and avenging.

Hailey is a vigilante and she is set to revenge. She does this as a necessity after learning that many who are found guilty of horrible sex crimes get away with it. If the justice system had not failed then the likes of Hailey would not be needed. She regards herself as the only hope for women in battling to keep women safe from predators like Jeff. Jeff’s skilled manipulation gets him what he wants. He goes into great length finding a victim, earning their trust, seducing them, raping and eventually killing them and keeps trophies of each murder just like many killers. He had a photograph of the girl that had gone missing and he had killed. He is the murderer next door that his neighbor cannot tell due to the facade he puts on.

Hailey’s form of justice is described as slightly violent and is mostly considered acts of self-defense. Her vigilante justice is mental and psychological and violent as it first appears when he numbs Jeff’s’ genitals with so much ice he cannot tell if he has been castrated or not, and also when he threatens him with his gun which she never gets to use. Her strategy is to manipulate Jeff into committing suicide for the crimes he has committed rather than her killing him.
