Sight

Mia's description of the incidents that took place before the mysterious disappearance of her father depicts a sense of sight. Mia says, "We know they made it to the park; witnesses have come forward, a dozen hikers and dog-walkers that saw them at various points around the waterfall trail as late as 11:10 A.M. At 11:38 A.M, Eugene was out of the woods, running in the middle of a narrow country road in our neighborhood, forcing a driver who'd run through a stop sign and turned too fast to swerve into a ditch to avoid hitting him." The imagery is significant because it gives readers hope that Mia's father, Adam, is alive despite the mysterious missing after the morning hike. The imagery gives evidence to the authorities and the family to confirm that Eugene and his father were together at the park before he disappeared.

Hearing

The sounds from the scene of the accident depict the sense of hearing. Mia says, "The screech of the tires and the sound of the car thudding into the ditch, not to mention the chain reaction of the two cars behind it, apparently caused a terrible cacophony of metallic crunching, banging, and squealing that brought people out, and bystanders reported seeing a boy later identified as Eugene staggering away." The imagery shows the accident's severity because it is hard to believe that Eugene survived. The sounds of the screeching brakes and the impact tell readers that the accident was fatal.

The imagery of the pitch

The secretive information depicted by Eugene's pitch is described to paint a picture of revelation. Mia says, "I lay on the grass and kept staring, listening, thinking. The higher the pitch, the faster run, the shove. In retrospect, it seems obvious these were clues, adrenaline-fueled aftershocks of the car crash and whatever had happened at the park with Dad. Still, at the moment, I could focus only on how much Eugene had already changed while I wasn't paying attention." The imagery shows Mia's regret for not taking Eugene's message seriously after the car crash, which could have given hints about their father's disappearance.
