Anita Desai was a prolific writer and any of her other novels and short stories would make a useful companion with Fire On The Mountain for their similar themes and exploration of characters' inner worlds, particularly Cry, the Peacock (1963), Baumgartner's Bombay (1988), or her 2011 novella collection, The Artist of Disappearance. Any of the books Nanda Kaul reads over the course of the novel are also of interest, especially The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon or Dead Souls because of Desai's personal interest in Japanese and Russian literature and their aesthetic relevance to Fire On The Mountain.
