Exiles: A Novel Background

Exiles: A Novel Background

Jane Harper's Exiles: A Novel was first published in November 2022 by Flatiron Books. Set in Australia, Exiles: A Novel follows an Australian federal investigator named Aaron Falk, who is on the way to a small town in wine country so that he could be there for the christening of his dear friend's baby. After Falk hears the story of Kim Gillespie, he grows intrigued. And after Gillespie's daughter asks him to investigate the disappearance of her mother, Falk and a friend agree to try and find Gillespie before it is too late. As Gillespie investigates the case, he discovers shocking things about the town in which Gillespie lived and the people who claimed to be Gillespie's friends.

When it was published in late 2022, Exiles was an overnight #1 New York Times bestseller and was well-reviewed—especially by fellow authors. Master of horror Stephen King expressed admiration towards Exiles and said that he "love[s] Jane Harper's Australia-based mysteries." Sue Turnbull of Sydney Morning Herald also loved Harper's novel, calling it "A beautifully observed crime novel about regional life ... Quietly and inevitably, the secrets and deceptions are unraveled as Falk finds himself deftly woven into the weft of this small community."
