Daughter in Exile Background

Daughter in Exile was published on January 31, 2023 by HarperVia. The follow-up to Adjapon's critically-acclaimed The Teller of Secrets, Daughter in Exile follows a young woman named Lola who immigrates from Senegal to the United States after she falls in love with a U.S. Marine who was stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Senegal. When her family learns of her decision to follow the love of her life to the United States, they don't approve of it. After she arrives in the U.S., however, she realizes that her life in the United States as an illegal alien isn't as easy as she thought it would have been. Despite the circumstances she finds herself in, Lola is determined to succeed in her new country by any means possible.

Shortly after its release, a number of critics reviewed Daughter in Exile. Most loved the novel, including Publisher's Weekly, who said that Adjapon "pulls off a strikingly frank portrait of a woman worn down by the system" and that her novels "continue to dazzle." Oyinkan Braithwaite, author of My Sister, the Serial Killer, felt similarly, writing that the novel is "A thought-provoking read."
