Introduction to Danny the Champion of the World

Danny the Champion of the World is a book about the relationship between a young boy—the protagonist and narrator, Danny—and his father. In the novel, the duo goes on a poaching expedition to steal pheasants from a wealthy brewer who treats the local villagers poorly. Danny comes up with a new poaching method that yields him and his father the biggest haul to date: 120 birds on the eve of the brewer's infamous opening day shooting party. It is a Robin Hood-esque adventure of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. The novel explores themes of social status, innovation, father/son relationships, and defiance.
