Crooked Hallelujah is in the tradition of modern Native writing, particularly the works of Tommy Orange (There, There) and Sherman Alexie (The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven). Like these writers, Ford strips away the assumptions about modern Indigenous life to show that Native people still live in the United States. With its short story structure and rambling family tree, the novel owes a debt to Louise Erdrich, particularly her classic novel Love Medicine.
