Chapter 5

For years, the murder dominates the town's conversations. People can't believe the number of coincidences that allowed the murder to occur; some people never forgive themselves for what happened. Twelve days after the murder, the investigating magistrate arrives. He notes the number of coincidences is absurd and is alarmed to not find a single clue linking Santiago to the wrongdoing. Most believe that Santiago's behavior on that fateful morning proved his innocence. The narrator thinks Santiago was baffled by the attack from the Vicario twins and died without understanding why.
