    When does the "Prologue" of The Canterbury Tales take place? Why is that important?

    The Canterbury Tales is, as the title suggests, a series of tales about various aspects of mediæval life. However, for such a collection of tales to be integrated into a single narrative, some kind of frame story is needed – and this is what the "General Prologue" provides. In Chaucer’s time, this technique was almost entirely new, and it still feels quite novel in our own time.
