Culture
The book includes many references to West African culture through the character of Binti. Indeed, she is a member of the South African Himba people and is the first of her kind to make the intergalactic journey to space. However, she often feels at conflict as though she is betraying her culture by pursuing an education, thinking her trip is a “transgression” to her identity.
Education
Being the first of her kind to ever be accepted onto the prestigious Oomza University marks a big transition in Binti’s life. Her desire to pursue education and become a mathematician is unheard of in her culture, which often leaves her feeling conflicted. Nonetheless, she is eager to break the stereotype of what it means to be a Himba girl, as she had expected to grow up and marry instead of pursuing an education.
Friendship
Binti’s friendship with a member of the villainous Meduse group, Okwu, is a turning point for her. She is able to understand that the Meduse are not a villainous people, and they are honourable. Indeed, it is the differences in Binti and Okwu’s cultures that helps them understand each other and develop their friendship.
