Why Duke?


The glass doors swung open and two guards and an entourage of EMTs rushed in with the patient. I slipped between two burly EMTs and placed the blanket on the shivering old woman on the gurney. “M3 will do,” the nurse at the Triage station said after taking the blood pressure and heart rate of the old woman. The other volunteer and I threw our weights against the sides of the gurney and pushed it forward to M3, the group of EMTs following us. As the other volunteer recorded the hospital bed number, I rushed back to the entrance of the ER, stopping only to disinfect my hands.

Volunteering at the Emergency Room in Eda Hospital had been one of the best experiences I had. I loved striding through the ER with bags of medicine for the nurses, a sense of purpose clear in my mind. Each time I completed a task – whether it’s something simple such as changing bed sheets or something more complicated like finding a spot for a patient, I feel this sense of accomplishment. That is one reason why Duke appeals to me so much. Duke offers its students a lot of community service opportunities and helps students on their paths to becoming a physician.
