    Book learning versus hands-on experience

    Group Discussion

    Objective:

    Students will develop and analyze ideas about the benefits and shortcomings of both book learning and experiential learning.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.4

    Structure:

    Chapter 1 of All Creatures Great and Small focuses on a situation where the real-world version of an event is very different from what Herriot expected based on his book learning. Students will work in small groups to prepare lists of times when books do and do not adequately prepare a person for the real world.
