Narrator

The narrator describes himself as a magician, though he is a celebrated writer of spirituality. He is popular in multiple nations. He is portrayed as the writer Paulo Coelho himself. He believes in spirituality but has no patience for rituals. In the start of the book, he is doubtful of his mentor and is seeking a new direction out of his existential crisis. On the advice of his master, he decides to pursue a journey across multiple nations to seek out his soul.

J

The narrator’s mentor and master. They met in Amsterdam in 1982 and he teaches the narrator to live in a hundred different ways, which momentarily awes the narrator but the euphoria soon dissipates. He used to have a normal life with wife and kids but left that to pursue spirituality.

Monica

Narrator’s agent and best fried. She left her studies in Chemical Engineering and shifted to Spain trying to convince publishers to publish the narrator’s work in other languages. She is willful but comes across as ‘cold’.

Hilal

Mysterious and passionate, she is a woman of 21 years of age. She is the first violinist of the most prestigious orchestra in Russia. She is Turkish by descent but is studying music in Russia, which she claims is a result of her sexual abuse as child. She is spiritual and believes to have a special connection with the narrator. She is interested in him sexually, and there is much sexual tension in the two but the narrator keeps her away given the massive age difference between the two.

Yao

Yao is a Japanese-born Russian translator. He has lived in multiple countries and has an air of wisdom. The narrator trusts him due to his calm demeanor and his sadness as a result of the loss of his wife. He is unable to move from the death of his wife and constantly seeks mediums and shamans.
