Alas, Babylon is recognized as one of the first post-apocalyptic novels. It was preceded by Nevil Schute's On the Beach (1957) and was published at the same time as Level 7 by Mordecai Roshwald. The novel's detailed look at life after a nuclear war has influenced works such as The Road by Cormac McCarthy and A Boy and His Dog by Harlan Ellison.
