Close Reading

Kind of Activity:

Group Work

Objective:

Students will practice-close reading Rich's poem in groups.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.4

Structure:

For this activity, split students into small groups of no more than five. Ask each group to make a color-coded poster showing their close reading of "Yom Kippur 1984." They should annotate the text so as to indicate literary devices in the poem and provide definitions for terms they are unfamiliar with. These devices could include:

• Imagery

• Tone

• Figurative language—metaphor, simile, etc.

• allusions to mythology and current events
