The book chronicles the history of humankind through six distinct beverages, beginning with beer. Beer was invented earliest, as a result of the Agricultural Revolution. Next came wine, then spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola. According to Standage, all of these beverages had a profound impact on history.

Standage's most famous ideas include the compression of space and time that came with the advent of the telegraph, and the information overload that exists in the twenty-first century.
