Franz Huchel
Franz Huchel is the story's protagonist, a 19-year-old boy struggling to tackle the evils of the Nazi regime creating havoc in Vienna. Franz is a young man who is ambitious, determined, and optimistic. When Franz goes to train with Otoo Trsnyek in his shop, he quickly learns the trade. While working with Otoo Trsnyek, Franz meets Dr. Freud, and they become best of friends. Franz asks advice from Dr. Freud before doing anything.
Franz also falls in love with Anezka but later realizes she is a prostitute and night dancer. However, that does not prevent Franz from loving her. Franz is later heartbroken when he discovers Anezka is dating a Nazi soldier. Franz fights for the release of Otoo Trsnyek, accused of supplying commodities to Jews. Franz is also arrested after protesting the death of Otoo Trsnyek by the Nazi regime.
Frau Huchel
Frau is Franz's mother. She is a hardworking woman who wants her son to get the best in life. After realizing that Franz is becoming a young adult, Frau sends him to work with Otoo Trsnyek and train as a shopkeeper so that he can get the knowledge to start his business.
Otoo Trsnyek
Otoo is the shop owner, where Franz trains to acquire shop management skills. Otoo is a fearless and determined man who wants to serve the Jews and the rest of the population. Unfortunately, when the Nazi regime comes to power, Otoo's shop is vandalized regularly on the claims that he supplies goods to Jews. The Nazi regime wants to suffocate the Jews and throw them out of Vienna. Otoo continues to supply goods to Jews despite the threats, and at last, he is arrested and killed in prison.
Dr. Sigmund Freud
Dr. Freud is a psychologist working in Vienna. The author describes Dr. Freud as a knowledgeable, friendly, and focused person who advises young men to do the right thing. Dr. Freud and Franz are best friends despite their huge age gap.
Anezka (Bohemian girl)
Anezka is the girl Franz falls in love with. At first, Franz does not know the girl's identity, but he remains determined to find her. Anezka is open-minded because she tells Franz she is a night dancer and prostitute. Anezka also tells Franz that she is dating a Nazi soldier.
Adolf Hitler
Adolf Hitler was the President and the Nazi party leader. When Adolf rises to power, he threatens the existence of the Jews in Vienna and other parts of the world. Adolf is an oppressive leader and murderer. Adolf's Nazi regime kills innocent Jews and those who do not subscribe to his ideologies.
