The Old Gringo Irony

The Old Gringo Irony

The old gringo

The old gringo goes to Mexico in order to join in the revolutionary effort and wants to die fighting for this cause. We get the impression that he is almost ready to die and isn't afraid as long as his death is honorable. However, he actually dies at the hand of Arroyo due to jealousy.

Irony of jealousy

Arroyo sees the connection between Harriet and the old gringo and becomes very jealous. As a result, he forces Harriet to have sex with him as revenge against the old gringo. However, this backfires terribly as it leads to the destruction of his beloved deed.

Irony of adventure

Harriet first travels to Mexico to seek adventure, as she has a boring life at home. However, the drama and danger she finds there is more than she bargained for and she later returns to America.
