Between Walls

Between Walls Character List

Speaker

The speaker is the only human present in the poem's world. None of the things described in the poem are imbued with consciousness; they are solely objects that the speaker is attempting to depict. It is reasonable to read the speaker as a stand-in for Williams, as the succinct style and focus on individual images are in line with much of the rest of his work. The speaker is characterized by the sharp clarity of his voice. He takes note of only what he believes is essential to each visual element in the scene.
