Amnesty: A Novel Summary

Amnesty: A Novel Summary

Aravind Adiga's book Amnesty: A Novel focuses on Danny (whose real name is Dhananjaya Rajaratnam), an illegal immigrant. For three years, he has been working as a storeroom cleaner and lives in a closet in that store. He has been trying to create a new identity so he can live a somewhat normal life despite the abnormal circumstances he has to deal with.

His girlfriend Sonja has no clue he is an illegal immigrant, so Danny must keep this from her so that there is no chance he is deported--something neither of them want. One day, a client of his gets murdered with a knife and is dumped into a creek. But the killer forgot one thing: his/her jacket. Thus, Danny immediately knows whose jacket it is a doctor who is having an affair with a woman that Danny knows. The entire day, he must decide if he should share this with the cops and possibly be deported or not share this and let the murderer get away.

As he keeps thinking about his life and the murder, he knows he could lose his whole career and the one person he loves the most: his girlfriend. Ultimately, the entire book focuses on having a better life, and in some means, you have to break the law, and do things for the better good of yourself.
