Hamilton was against the Articles of Confederation because they had no central government, and the Articles were written to afford the states individual rights. As a result, the colonies lacked unity. Hamilton knew that thirteen states acting under the authority of their own separate governments would counteract the ideal of freedom and leave the newly formed government unprotected and weak.
