Sanna
The main protagonist of the book, young Sanna is living a life of despair under the Nazi regime. She wishes to gain freedom above all else, and indeed, in a way, she gets this at the end.
Heine
A journalist who is having an affair with Liska. He no longer works as one due to the censorship cast by the Nazi regime, and this is a major source of his discontent throughout the book.
Liska
Algin’s wife. She is having an affair with Heine, who she comes to care for.
Algin
Sanna’s brother, who she lives with in Frankfurt. He does not have a strong relationship with his wife, resulting in her having an affair. He has much pain ad sadness at the loss of his freedom of speech and the fact that the media is dictated by the Nazis.
Franz
Sanna’s cousin brother who she is very close to and was forced to leave behind when she moved to Frankfurt. He admits to having killed a man, which results in him and Sanna making plans to leave Frankfurt together.
