Speaker
The speaker is an unnamed woman who is observing a beautiful summer day, but finds herself feeling sullen. She possesses an awareness of the season passing even as it is at its height. Her narrative tone differs from her internal mood. The first is lighthearted, while the second is more melancholy.
Celestial figure
At the end of the poem, a celestial being appears before the speaker. It tells her to appreciate what is before her, as it is worth seeing because it has an end. Its tone of voice differs from the speaker's in that it has a divine perspective on time that goes far beyond the speaker's. As such, it has a much more optimistic tone than the speaker.
Wedding party
The speaker imagines summer as a wedding between the months of May and June. The wedding party includes May, June, and May's parents.
Rocks
A personified pile of gray rocks asks the speaker why she appears so unhappy during this celebratory moment.
