1: Why are using traditional historical sources problematic when talking about Sub-Saharan Africa?

Traditional sources are problematice because sub-Saharan societies lacked the written word. Oral tradition was the most important communicator of history, and as we all know, the spoken word gets changed over time (think a game of telephone).
