What does Auggie mean when he says about the people at the science project fair, ‘All those eyes are compasses, and I’m like the North Pole to them’?

This is a metaphor/simile. Auggie uses science imagery to point out that he is the centre of attention because of the way he looks. It is ironic that there are so many interesting things to see at a science fair yet people still stare at him.
