Women and Other Animals Background

Women and Other Animals Background

Women and Other Animals is a collection of short stories written by the American author Bonnie Jo Campbell and published in the year 1999 by the University of Massachusetts Press. The author was awarded the Associated Writing Programs Award for the collection just a year later.

The collection is the debut novel written by the author and the stories all have females as their protagonists. The narrator follows them as they try to navigate through life and try to adapt to new situations. The protagonists are as young as twelve year old and the novel proves that no matter how young a person is, they still have to overcome certain struggles.

The characters in the stories all come from rural areas or are financially disadvantaged and thus the stories may appear tragic at times. Despite this, the stories presented are proven to keep a reader engaged and affect him in ways he could never think of.
