Yes, I think he is truly free. He has done his last act of loyalty for John Thornton. He can now leave the world of man forever. White Fang hears the call of the wolf and he takes his place in the wild. He becomes the alpha-wolf unfettered and free to roam the wilderness: he fulfills his final calling.
