Describe the setting?

Where the Red Fern Grows is set in the Ozark Mountains, one of the finest hunting grounds in the world. The Ozarks is an area boasting rich, fertile soil....... huge red oaks, and a small population. The Illinois River flows nearby, and the land on which Billy lives belongs to the Cherokee and was given to his mother because she is part Cherokee.
