In terms of the 1960s, Connie symbolizes youth, vulnerability, and exploitation. The 1960s were a time of major change in America. Families were moving to the suburbs in droves, something that changed the family unit as a whole. The cohesiveness of family was dissipating, families lost important social connections, and the feeling that suburbia was safe led to additional freedoms for the teens, who often obtained their identity through music. Sexual permisiveness comingled with songs that glamorized sex and drugs. Arnold seduces Connie with charm and words.... he speaks to Connie in words that could translate into one of the love songs so popular at the time. He draws her from the safety of her home.... the home that is supposed to be safe, when in fact, it leaves her unprotected.
