For years poets, especially those of the "Romantic" era, have bemoaned the way in which industrialization have driven us away from an appreciation of nature. Whether or not Thoreau thought such industrialization to be worth "running" to nature for may be up for discussion, but the truth is that communing with nature is one way in which one can get in touch with oneself.
