There is a lot of personification.

Here is a simile:

Set on the dark plain like gigantic chessmen.

Rhyme/ alliteration:

Letters of thanks, letters from banks,

Onomatopoeia.

Towards the steam tugs yelping down a glade of cranes

Notes from overseas to the hebrides
