Volpone

What is the significance of the shrine in Volpone - The Fox ?

The answer should have points of view apart from the shrine being the holder of the gold amassed by Volpone and also being the centre of blasphemy (a treasury when compared to a shrine entails heresy according to Catholicism).

Depending upon interpretation, it is possible to view that shrine as an idol, or a blasphemous symbol. For the shrine to be ensconced behind the altar, a place where Volpone can kneel amidst his treasure, and thus worship his money..... is an act of blasphemy.
