They couldn't go to school during the day because they had to work at various jobs on the plantation or domestic positions. One of the tenants of slave management is to keep slaves ignorant and hence ensure they won't be able to have "big" ideas. Washington took night school which enabled him to learn more than children who attended school during the day.
