How does the setting/time period of the play contribute to our understanding of Minnie Wright’s position?

The setting of the story is the early 1900's. Gender roles were pretty specific. Women had little to no rights. Minnie was caught in an abusive marriage. Ironically only the women visiting the house can see details expressing this abuse. The men, who are the law, are oblivious to Minnie's life and motivations.
