Dr. Livesey then warned Hands:

“Mr. Hands,” he said, “here are two of us with a brace of pistols each. If any one of you six make a signal of any description, that man's dead.”

Mr. Hands is kept at bay by Livesey's threats. This shows that the mutineers are cowardly individuals. They only seem courageous in big groups.

Dr. Livesey threatened Hands:

"Mr. Hands," he said, "here are two of us with a brace pistols each. If anyone of you six makes a signal of any description, that man's dead."

Mr. Hands is kept where he was and doesn't make any signal towards his partners. This shows that all of the mutineers are coward individuals. They pretent they're quite strong' but the fact is tha they're strong only in big groups, not while alone.
