In my opinion, both men are being honest. Silver doesn't mince words, nor does he hide his anger or vindictiveness. He wants what he wants, and his fine clothing changes his appearance, but he doesn't hide behind it.

Smollett, on the other hand, refuses all of Silver's demands, and he too, refuses to mince words. He frankly tells Silver what will happen if he and the others turn themselves in unarmed.
