Toni Morrison: Essays Background

Born in raised in small town Ohio, author Toni Morrison accomplished a lot in her 88 year long life. After receiving her undergraduate degree in English from Harvard and her master's degree in American Literature from Cornell University, she went on to write a number of important novels (the most famous of which is the Pulitzer Prize-Winning Beloved [1987]).

Apart from her many novels, plays, and other important work, Morrison was a tremendously prolific essayist. Her work spanned a number of areas, but most of it focused on politics (after President Donald Trump won the election in 2016, she wrote an essay titled "Mourning for Whiteness"), popular culture, books, feminism, race, and philosophy.

Morrison died in August of 2019 at the age of 88. Her last work: a collection of essays titled The Source of Self-Regard: Essays, Speeches, Meditations.
