Scout attempts to explain that Burris only comes to school on the first day of class. She describes the Ewells as unwashed poor folk, lazy and isolated. Certainly this foreshadows what we will see in Bob Ewell, the father of the family. This certainly foreshadows the state we see of the Ewell family later in the book.
