To Kill a Mockingbird

Initially jem is suspicious about the objects that he and scout have been finding in the tree. Eventually he accepts their findings as gifts, but he is still confused: "I don't get it, I just don't get it". What might he be on the verge of telling scout?

Jem does not yet understand the symbolic meaning behind the gifts. He also cannot connect the relevance of the gifts to who might be giving them.
