When Harper Lee wrote her famous book, it was amidst the backdrop of racial civil unrest in her home state of Alabama. In 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her bur seat to a white man and Dr. Martin Luther King jr. was becoming a major figure in the Civil Rights Movement. This was also around the time that To kill a Mockingbird was published.
